About Harriet Cannon

 

I’m Harriet Cannon* and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and licensed Mental Health Counselor.  I have over 20 years experience working in the United States and internationally as a consultant and psychotherapist. I work with individuals, couples, families and organizations. I specialize in self exploration and relationship work; life transitions and in multicultural relationships, cultural identity exploration and international relocation transitions.

Personal and Professional Ethics

• A personal philosophy and committed life style of high moral and ethical standards which is reflected in the long term respectful relationships with clients, and a strong community referral network of colleagues and other professionals
• I conduct my psychotherapy and consultation practice according to the AAMFT Code of Ethics. (follow the links on the web site  to public information on AAMFT to resources, to code of ethics)
• A high level security clearance, granted by the United States State Department in 1988 in order to provide consultation services for American Foreign Service professionals, and Military employees and their families, while living in South America.
• Membership in the Washington State Mental Health Quality Assurance Council from 1998 to 2001, a position appointed by the governor of the state.
• Successful completion of Approved Supervisor Designation by American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy in 1994, a two-year program in ethics and systems consultation for senior clinicians.

Creative, Accountable, and a Strategic Thinker

• Consulting at The Boeing Company, National and International Health Services, from 1996 -2006, developing new processes for employee risk reduction, screening and training for Boeing expatriates and their families, and co-coordinating the new processes with other department managers.

• During a challenging era of health care reform, creating and implementing a successful reorganization and retraining of 200 employees at five offices of Family Counseling Services as a member of the executive management team from 1991-1994.
• Working as the Legislative Chairperson of the Washington Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, planning successful campaigns for mental health confidentiality legislation and mental health professional licensure from 1995-1998.
• Developing the first holistic treatment program in Washington State for chemically dependent adolescents and their families as a member of the management team at Ryther Child Center in Seattle Washington.  This successful cutting edge program developed in the late 1980’s helped change the model for family therapy for chemically dependent and troubled youth.

International and Multicultural Experience

• Over 20 years as a psychotherapist to multicultural individuals, couples, and families in the United States and internationally.
• Consultant to schools and businesses in the United States and internationally on issues related to cultural identity, culture shock, expatriation, repatriation, multicultural conflict resolution, and family education.

• Consultation to US and international organizations in South America, including the US and Canadian consulates, Puente Britiana LLC, and the Nido de Aguilas International School, from 1988 -1991.
